Romelu Lukaku: Every Striker’s Nightmare

Lukaku has fast become one of the Premier League’s most in-demand forwards. His robust and electric style has attracted interest from around the footballing world including from Spanish giants Real Madrid, who declared their interest not so long ago. But where should Romelu go?

lukakuThe toughest battle for most strikers is to grab enough goals in the best leagues to make a name for themselves. You will often see a striker scoring in big games and then having his name thrown around by the big clubs. Lukaku is quite the opposite. Having scored just twice in his last 12 appearances against any of the top six, the Everton man has still somehow found himself in a position of power.

Now he’s stuck with the dilemna that often plagues strikers. On one side of the coin, the big Belgian can picture himself becoming a Real Madrid icon, a legend alongside the likes of Raul. The other possibility, which people seem to think is more likely, is that he becomes the next Fernando Morientes, known for his good form at a lower league club but unable to handle the big time job.

Strikers seem to find themselves at this crossroads because their careers are generally played out in phases. It is not often you find a striker who can guarantee a club 20+ goals a season. More often, as with Lukaku now, they just enjoy periods of good form.

Another example is Daniel Sturridge, who was pushed around between Chelsea and Man City before ending up at Anfield, where he had a good season and now finds himself at the crossroads.

Once you reach the pinnacle of football you are always going to be facing a slippery slope. And strikers more than any other players base their game on form and confidence. So if you’ve gone from Everton to Madrid to Stoke your confidence has taken a beating and your form probably did too. Essentially, you’re looking at a lose-lose situation unless you can immediately take the world by storm so you’re more than likely to end up going back to where you came from.

Having already been rejected by Chelsea and still aged just 23, Lukaku might be dazzling at Everton right now but something tells me his next step should be taken with an awful lot of care. Otherwise the only route will be down. Young talents his age are often swayed by cash, and too much too soon can easily end in disaster.
