Picture this – you claim to have the best house but everyone turns their heads at the neighbours house because it has the best cars parked outside and he has the best looking wife inside – so isn’t his house better?
That’s like us Premier League fans, we claim to have the best league in the world, so why are all the best players in La Liga? We claim to play the most exciting football, so why do we park the bus against Spanish teams? We claim to have the best national team, so why is our captain not one of the best players in the world? It’s embarrassing.
Immediately, you’re typing in rage – ‘can Spanish players do it on a cold night in Stoke though?’ – who remembers when Stoke were at their premium power of being the most disgusting team to play against in the PL and a weak Valencia side turned up – beat them 1-0 at the Brittania stadium, didn’t let Stoke have a shot on goal and kept over 70% possession. The reason why I remember that day so well is because I was there with my best mate who’s a Stoke fan and all the talk was La Liga vs England, La Liga only have 2 good teams etc etc. Then 9th place Valencia played 9th placed Stoke and that’s what happened. Stoke got schooled.
Looking at just the players before the teams, 9 of Real Madrids starting 11 would walk into any Premier League team, same for Barcelona and same for Atletico Madrid. The quality of football in Spain is electrifying, when Barcelona play Real Madrid, you’ll almost never see a dry encounter. When United play City or Liverpool play Chelsea, there’s every chance it could end 0-0, why you might ask? Because we don’t have the belief, nor the players, nor the talent to challenge each other head to head. That’s why when Premier League teams face Barcelona and Madrid, they get ambushed in the Champions League.
4 out of the last 5 Europa League winners have been La Liga teams, 3 out of the last 5 Champions League trophies have been won by clubs from Spain too. Wake up please.
I don’t even know where the debate sits – the best players in the world – Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo, Messi, Iniesta, Godin, Oblak, the list goes on, all play in La Liga. There’s 3 outfield players in the Premier League that could play in Spain; Aguero, Coutinho and Hazard. Every other player hasn’t got a chance.
The Premier League is all about money – the 19th best team in the PL will still make more money than the 6th best team in Spain but who cares right? I may as well pop down to my local Sunday League team to watch their games than watch 80% of the Premier League fixtures. Half of the league still relies on long ball football. Sam Allardyce still manages in the best division in England, need I say more?
