Most Governments around the globe are heavily focused on reducing carbon emissions to save the planet and Solar Power is a key weapon. Right? So it’s a bit alarming to see Greenpeace launching a petition to ‘Stop the attack on the UK solar industry.’
Last year over 160 non-Government organisations, schools, academics, energy providers and public institutions ask the Chancellor to stop the proposed rise in business rates for solar panels.
According to Greenpeace, ‘Recent government cuts to the solar industry have already triggered an estimated 12,000 job losses. But now it’s been revealed the government could allow a huge new tax hike to be inflicted on the industry, one that could leave businesses and schools that install solar panels with a tax bill that’s up to 8 times higher.
Industry experts are raising the alarm that such a sudden and huge tax rise would prove catastrophic for swathes of UK solar firms. That’s why it’s vital we speak up now, before the changes are approved in early 2017.’
According to the Solar Trade organisation, ‘Changes to business rates paid on solar power could see many systems become uneconomic. The changes will see rates rise up to eight fold for organisations that own solar panels and use the power themselves. This would see the most efficient use of solar, consumption at point of generation, bizarrely penalised by the tax system.’
Put simply, the Govt is planning to tax Solar Power and experts think it’s going to set back the industry which does seem pretty stupid.
if you care, sign the Greenpeace petition here as almost 200,000 already have.
