Game of Thrones returns to our screens later this Spring and for fans of the epic fantasy drama, it can’t come soon enough. This series will have just seven episodes, down from the usual ten, so expect lots of action to be crammed into each screening.
For those that don’t know, Game of Thrones is set in the continents of Essos and Westeros, and follows the quest of various warring families to sit upon the Iron Throne. Based on the books by George RR Martin, the six series so far have been wildly popular and the seventh and eighth promise much in the way of resolution, both for the characters and the long-suffering fans!
In the forefront of the story is Daenerys Targaryen, a hugely popular character throughout, and someone for whom the pursuit of the Iron Throne has become a relentless crusade. Is she a fiercely independent woman, looking to make her mark in a world dominated by aggressive, dominant men? Or a crazy psychopathic murderer, consumed by an insatiable blood lust and desire to dominate all those around her? The truth is that she is all of this, adapting her behaviour to suit what, or whoever is standing in her way.
We first saw Daenerys as a meek and down-trodden sister to the abusive Viserys. This all changed when she was married off, to the Warlord Khal Drogo. As she learned the ways of the Dothraki, she realised she was a lot stronger and in series 1, this came to a head when her husband was taken ill and a Witch was summoned to cure him.
This treatment failed and Daenerys took her revenge by burning the Witch alive, in the same funeral pyre used for her husband. The series finale saw her also enter the fire, stark naked, with her most treasured possessions, three dragon eggs. She emerges the next morning, completely unscathed, with three baby dragons on her arm.
This proves to her, and all those around her, that she is a force to be reckoned with. Throughout the subsequent series’, she carves her way through the kingdom of Essos, calmly assembling an army of ruthless killers, as well as a retinue of followers, all of whom willing to lay down their lives in her cause.
As we move into series seven, we see Daenerys edging ever closer to Westeros, ready to go to war with the ruling Lannister’s. She has brought together a number of families as her allies, but make no mistake – she is very much in charge!
The Targaryen family have a huge bloodline, going back centuries and Daenerys has added ‘Mother of Dragons’ to her list of titles. It is clear that the dragons will play a big part in the destiny of Westeros and her ability to tame and fly her dragons will be tested to the limit. Various theories abound as to who will join her on the backs of these blood-thirsty beasts but one thing is for sure, it will be Daenerys Stormborn, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons, who will be calling the shots.
