If ‘Castaway’ seemed more adventure than nightmare and ‘Lost’ was simply full of wimps with no clue, then have we got the getaways for you. Intrepid travel firm Docastaway is rescuing us from the banality of beach bars and humdrum hotels by offering holidays on the most remote and unexplored islands of world. Say goodbye to those jam-packed pools and say hello to seclusion with these incredible deserted destinations.
Indonesia – Siroktabe
Ideal for time alone or with your loved one, this package offers you high level isolation. You can live all your wild fantasies here surrounded by clear waters and untouched beaches. Catch and cook your own food, snorkel and swim, or simply enjoy long lonesome walks along the vast, uncluttered beaches.
The entire package includes several remote locations with guides, basic food provisions and transport facilities. You also have your own boat at hand ready to transport you to the next adventure, or back to civilisation if paradise is not to your preference. Although Siroktabe is recommended April-November, it will beat most destinations the rest of the year too.
Philippines – Tazi Island
This not-so-isolated island is an ideal escape with family or friends. Tazi has couple-houses perfect for those groups with multiple plus ones, providing the space for socialising and seclusion all at once. There are also stylish cottages with an optional cook for hire.
If you are lucky, you may have the entire island to yourself! They have a kayak facility for small excursions and a motor boat available 24×7 for your convenience. You can explore neighbouring islands, take aimless ambles along the shore and play pirates in perfect, unspoiled privacy.
Indonesia – Amparo Island
This is a great place to go solo for a while and as far removed from London life as it gets. At Amparo, you can match the setting to your mood: revel in the remote waters outside your hut or embrace the wild with only the barest amenities.
You can have a permanent guide if you wish or go it alone (with an emergency guide on call if needed). It’s well worth reading the accounts of previous solo docastaway-ers such as Reikko Hori before going fully feral – it’s not for the fainthearted. If it still sounds your cup of fresh coconut milk, Amparo Island is an ideal spot and habitable throughout the year.
Philippines – Marooning
This is a step up for those who are serious about getting some peace and quiet. You’ll live in a bamboo cottage on a completely isolated beach with no guide, no food, just total freedom! You’ll have a canoe and some basic necessities, but the rest is up to you and nature. When you’re not hunting down dinner, you can roam the exceptional coral reefs and discover the island at your leisure.
Guides are just a call away if an emergency arises, and whilst October to July is the best time to visit, its glorious all year round.
Indonesia – Gambolo Island
Spear and hook fishing from your canoe and chance visits from local fishermen are just some of the highlights of this unique island.
As usual, you can go it alone or be guided with the basic amenities provided. What sets Gambolo apart is that you may well meet with other adventurers and you can join forces with your new foraging friends if you choose.
One castaway built a more reptilian rapport: ‘monitor lizards became my best friends because they roamed about near my shelter, which helped keep the rodents away’. Perhaps we can convince Sadiq to rid us of rats by bringing a touch of the tropics to the Tube!
Philippines – The Private Lake
Having an entire lake of languid turquoise water all to yourself sounds like a dream, but is yet another blissful bundle from Docastaway. This private lake in the Philippines can be yours, with all the tranquility and peace you could ask for thrown in. This trip provides the maximum level of isolation by blocking local fishermen from entering your space.
There’s luxurious accommodation with a barbecue, a kayak for exploring the nearby beaches and once again, the option of a guide to keep you company.
Central America Caribbean Survival
It’s time to up the ante: if you’re ready and raring to brave the forces of nature, this package is tailor-made for you.
The first few days will be spent learning survival techniques from experts, before being copter dropped on your deserted island to put them into practice.
Leaping from the helicopter, you will swim to your destination with basic necessities and tents in tow. This adventure happens in groups, so there is less privacy than other packages, but there’s no comparison when it comes to getting the adrenaline pumping.
Oceania – Devil’s Island
Here it is – the reason some have scrolled this far. For all those would-be survivalists who have scoffed at beachside solitude and laughed in the face of luxurious huts, we bring you the ultimate in island endurance.
Dubbed ‘Devil’s Island’ by other castawayers, its worth noting that many who opted for this adventure had to abandon their stay in favour of a less harrowing option – holidaying it ain’t. There are neither beaches nor shelter on this volcanic island, a mere dot in the middle of the Pacific, but there’s more than enough opportunity for a swim inbetween trying to stay alive.
Docastaway will advise you about the precautions you need to take, but be warned that this is challenging in the extreme.
It’s clear these aren’t your average beach holidays; they’re a once in a lifetime opportunity to put yourself to the test or to truly find tranquility. Docastaway offer enough variety to suit everyone’s taste, from medium trips with just the right blend of comfort and adventure, to absolute abandonment in the unforgiving elements. The accommodation varies wildly, from cottages and campsites to nothing at all, and the prices do the same. In fact, there’s only one guarantee across them all: that getting away for some sun, sea and sand will never be quite the same again.
