Within minutes of entering Kensington’s Maggie Jones you’ll forget you were ever in London. The decor is feel-at-home farmhouse, with bunches of herbs and lavender, old cartwheels and rustic wood covering the walls. They don’t have a fire but they have enough warmth in their food to keep you toasty. The meals are hearty, the atmosphere homely – a real come-on-in classic.

The Antelope
This pub near Tooting Broadway tube station is not only a bright spark on the southern map, it’s a blazing fire too. Dark woods and endless rooms, it boasts not one, not two but three fires. The atmosphere is just as welcoming and the food a treat. We like to head on down on pub quiz nights, where the wit and warmth flow free in the glint of the fire.
Anglesea Arms
Apart from snug decor, the real treat here is the daily changing menu. The Anglesea Arms in Hammersmith is a powerhouse for sensational seasonal food. What you get is a hearty menu, with only the finest and freshest ingredients. Lip-smacking, belly-warming, beautiful food in a pub full of character.

Beach Blanket Babylon
The decorations are as out there as the name, and none of it leaves you wanting. The original branch in Notting Hill is a sensation of fireplaces and fabulous decor. Book a seat next to the hearth that’s shaped like a mouth to really make the most of it. The food may be a bit pricey but it practically needs its own postcode when it arrives. Their newer Shoreditch site is no less stunning: east or west, you’ll see BBB at its best.

St Moritz
Any place that serves bubbling cheese fondue has to feature on this list. Can’t afford the time or money for the real deal? Head on to St Moritz, London’s oldest Swiss restaurant, housed in Soho. They have fondue options coming out their ears, with chocolate, cheese and a hearty beef stock all vying for your attention. You’ll feel like you’ve died and gone to alpine heaven.

Southampton Arms
This Kentish Town boozer had to make it onto our list just for its pure charm. It has dark woods and hearty wholesome foods explained best by the words “ale, cider, meat” painted on the side of the building. There’s no fuss here: they have opening times that include ‘-ish’, no phone, no reservations and certainly no time wasters. Check out their list of proper emergencies that mean you can call their special mobile number. It’s British, it’s brilliant, and it’s a proper bloody local.
