13 Excellent Pimm’s Cocktail Recipes

While the weather may not abide, there can be no denying that summer has arrived when the Pimms makes its appearance on the picnic table.  But, summer or no summer, true blue Brits will find any excuse to celebrate the joy of Pimm’s.

History of Pimm’s

Pimm’s was invented by James Pimm, who owned an oyster bar in London back in the 19th century. Known as the No. 1 cup,  Pimms began  as a digestive with a secret mix of herbs and spices mixed with gin. The No. 1 cup developed a following and Pimms began production in 1851.

New cups such as the Pimm’s No. 2 (with whiskey) and Pimm’s No. 3 (with brandy) followed. Today a Pimms fruit cup is an essential component of any Summer entertaining.  Read on to discover the joys of cocktail making with a Pimm’s twist.

Making Perfect Pimm’s

Pimms

  • Pimm’s is a thing of beauty, so it’s better to use lots as a base spirit (for example, one part Pimm’s to three parts lemonade) – making it weak will actually make it taste like squash and not Pimm’s any more
  • Be strict with your ingredients and always use fresh ones
  • Crushing the mint in your hand or bashing the leaves will contribute to bringing the maximum flavour
  • Borage or basil can be used as a substitute for mint in most Pimm’s recipes
  • Tonic water is good for those who want a less sweet drink
  • Only use good quality lemonade
  • Sparkling wine and ginger beer actually make Pimm’s look and taste different
  • Soft fruits like the strawberries must be added before serving and not before chilling, as they will become mushy
  • Make sure you don’t add the lemonade too early
  • If you plan to buy imitation brands from the supermarket, don’t buy ones that have simply jumped onto the Pimm’s-making bandwagon for the sake of being there. Go for the generous and sincere attempts.

Pimm’s is an integral part of British summer. The easy to prepare Pimm’s is essential on a hot English summer’s day. So make one for yourself and say – cheers!
