How do you tell if someone is lying?

There are loads of people and books, experts and super people who have covered the topic of how to tell a liar or someone lying to you. Interestingly it tends to boil down to three main ares of interest. So whether it’s the FBI, Mi5 or Inland Revenue saying how to tell, it’s pretty much the same stuff. Here you go!

Pay attention to exaggerated details. People who are not being honest tend to say too much, almost like they are trying to convince you, and themselves, of something at the same time. Like on Seinfeld when Kramer meets the proctologist who says the best stories always start with ‘it was a million to one shot’ Cosmo Kramer: Have you ever met a proctologist? Well, they usually have a very good sense of humor. You meet a proctologist at a party, don’t walk away.

Pay attention to the person’s voice. A person’s voice suggest a lot, if they suddenly start talking faster or slower than normal then there’s generally a reason. Higher pitch, lower tone, something slightly different, listen out for it, its often because they are fibbing. ,

Pay close attention to the person’s reaction to your questions. If they are telling the truth it should be a normal exchange. Moslty because there’s nothing else going on and nothing to hide or mask. Lying requires covering up or deflecting or some other way of leading you away from the lie. It’s easiest to see in the child caught out, they rage back ‘no i didn’t.“ That’s a fib. But the greatest one if “You don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to,” which is almost always covering a lie. Sudden movements too.

Test it out..

Use yes or no questions. If you don’t get a yes or no then you there. Clarify the same question and if the answer is convoluted and differs when you ask it, then be suspicious.

However.. The body language people will point to the eyes. Looking up for thinking about the answer and looking down when lying. This can work unless the subject know it in which case they can accommodate to trick you. Loads of experts think the look up/down method is flawed.
