Every now and then there is a little discovery out there which triggers something in you, a desire to do something different, to opt out. Well here’s one for you, an Eco Capsule to exit regular life and live off the grid for awhile. A couple of architects, lead by Tomas Zacek from Bratislava in Slovak Republic have designed the EcoCapsule which is a completely self contained, self-sustainable alternative way of living.
The EcoCapsule, or ‘smart house is powered solely by solar and wind energy. It allows you to live off-the-grid, with the luxury of a hotel room.600 watts of solar cells power the electrical requirements, a low-noise wind turbine generating 750W day and night and a rainwater collection and filter system.
The first 50 ecocapsules are priced at around £70k and then get cheaper if you are prepared to wait, or if you are buying in bulk :-). I’m sure of you’re buying 200 it’s a lot less per unit.
So really you would need to find a place to park it (not that it drives), a nice remote block of land or a wadi in the desert somewhere to begin your journey off the grid. If you live in the UK, at £70k it’s cheaper that anything you’ll find in a city. In London that will get you half a lockup which you can’t live in so put in perspective it’s an interesting option.
Throw in a mobile broadband plan and you are all set.. You will need an address to have your mail sent to, but then maybe that’s missing the point. Opt out of mail, internet, Netflix and all communications with the world. Just you and the environment. Hmm sounds pretty interesting.
