Brixton is Fabulous, Check These Out!

The birthplace of David Bowie needs no introduction. Full of Jamaican and Latin clubs with some of the city’s best music, Brixton is gentrifying rapidly and the gay community, opportunistic sorts and Australians are moving in, demanding great coffee and cafés. To sum up Brixton, you need look no further than Black Elvis – a wonderful performer in pubs and clubs around the area.

Brixton has always been a working-class suburb home to an eclectic and charming blend of Caribbean, African and Asian people who influence every aspect of the culture, food, shopping and music.

Eating Out

It’s really simple, head over to Brixton Market and wander around the simply amazing selections of food, possibly the best in the whole city. For breakfast, try Duck Egg café for yes, duck eggs, or you can ask for hen eggs.

Hit Negril for authentic Jamaican food like jerk chicken, plantains or rice and peas, yum! Kaosarn is good for Thai food – try the Bangkok noodle soup or fresh spring rolls. Okan is a great Japanese street food café.

Elephant serves great Pakistani street food, or the cinema bar and café at Ritzy for food, drinks and a movie.

Cornercopia serves loads of smaller dishes, with a cocktail bar to get you going. New Fujiyama has Japanese food with reggae music, or why not drop into the Caribbean supermarket and pick up all sorts of wonderful things you’ve never even heard of.

There’s loads more to choose from, so just get there and something will grab your fancy.

Finally, some of the best cakes in the world are found either whole or by the monster slice for £4 at Sponge and Cream. Imagine an orange and zucchini cake with cinnamon icing, or cupcakes, brownies, cookies and on and on…

Going Out

Kaff puts on weekend DJ sessions in a mellow café environment, with comfy seats and great cocktails.

Brixton Academy, now officially called O2 Academy Brixton, is one of London’s leading music venues, nightclubs and theatres. The art deco stunner is home to great bands and an eclectic mix of music, (The Clash played their Rock the Casbah opener here). Check out what’s on and you’re sure to find something great.

The Prince Albert is a pub by day selling burgers and chips, then at night it transforms into a pumping scene for house grooves, funky edits and a range of local and touring DJs. The David Bowie tribute night was a wild one.
brixtonreggae nightsprince albertElectric Brixton opened in September 2011 and is one of south London’s best dance venues, hosting regular drum ‘n’ bass, electronica and dance nights, plus big name DJs and live acts. Also loads of drum ‘n’ bass parties and all-night action.

The Dogstar is a pub/club with floorboards and space to dance next to old portraits, velvet drapes and a chandelier. Visitors rave about ‘smashing afternoons’ and ‘nice little hidey holes to get close in’, but others enjoy or complain that it’s always packed. Good for some, we guess.

Brixton is also full of Caribbean and Latin clubs, smaller awesome bars, late-night venues and, if you’re in the know, warehouse parties pop up all the time and are pretty full on entertainment. Make sure you know where you’re going and what to expect.
