Shoppin Bold and Brave at Darkroom

Conduit Street at Lamb claims to be one of the most intriguing shopping places in London. As you may imagine, the shop is dimly lit and the décor is dark canvas with black lampshades giving it a darkroom appearance. You will find unique accuracies for everyone. The selection is carefully chosen from renowned and unheard of names like Lizzy Disney, Hay, and Stitchwallah. The shop also lends itself to gallery space for the likes of Eleanor Bolton, Henriette Lofstorm, and By Boe, for displaying sculptural jewellery.

“Contrast is the main thing we do”

The quote comes straight from co-founder Rhonda Drakeford when talking about the shop. The creativity of both founders is expressed through their collection which is artfully displayed against the inky black backdrop with a dash of colour thrown in. Rhonda describes it as hard edge aesthetic which is bold, graphic, and soft all at the same time.

Surprise!
While the signature is bold, dark, hard, and soft, there are quite a few surprising hues to the Darkroom. When you browse through the shop, you may find jewellery from the 1950s, leather belts in shades of blue and yellow, notebooks bound in brightly coloured leather. It is not a huge store so you can easily go through it without tiring yourself out.

One and All
The clientele is as varied as the shop’s merchandise. From tourists to art students and from Bloomsbury ladies with bulging purses to barristers from the Royal Courts, people from all walks of life visit the Darkroom in search for just the right furnishing, jacket, belt, or necklace.

Rare
Alongside well known names, there are plenty of unheard of talents hidden in the Darkroom. These names include the likes of Rhonda Drakeford – yes the co-owner -, totem, Harris, and Phil Cuttance.

The Prices
Not only is the clientele socially varied, it is also financially varied. All budgets are accommodated in the Darkroom. On an average prices range between 100 GBP to 300 GBP. Seasonal modifications, regular stocking, changing themes, and different events attract one and all.

All in All
All in all, Darkroom is a contrast whichever way you look at it. From colours, to merchandise, to labels, there is contrast in everything. The funeral parlour across the street lends itself to further enhance the other worldly experience that is Rhonda and Lulu’s Darkroom.
