Make Up Guide for Active Women

As much as we know and think we shouldn’t wear make up to workout, sometimes, we just need the extra lift to make us look a little awake and motivate us to get a sweat on. But is there a right or wrong thing to do when it comes to make up and the gym? We sat down with Elaine Lynskey, a London based Make Up Artist to chat all things make up, sweat and training.

Start With Your Base

make upThe rule we live by for your base layer is that your skin should be able to breathe.

Wearing a heavy foundation will mean the sweat has nowhere to go and will stay under your skin. This can lead to skin irritation and breakouts which will only make us want to wear more makeup!

Elaine suggested that if a base is a must have, use a concealer stick on the areas that you want to cover such as under eyes, on blemishes and around nose.

Awaken Your Eyes

make upPersonally, mascara is a must have item whether I’m working out or not but for those who may have lighter and thinner lashes, Elaine recommend getting your lashes dyed and permed especially if you will be exercising often.

Sounds like this would also be a great option for the water babies amongst us who don’t want to laden our lashes with waterproof mascara which irritate us on our googles.

If you are happy with how dark and curly your lashes are, Elaine recommended Maybelline Full ’N Soft Waterproof mascara as it doesn’t drop bits onto your cheeks, it’s not clumpy, stays put and is contact lens safe.

For That Rosy Glow

Use a tinted balm for both lips to keep them moisturised and feeling soft. If you choose the right colour you can also dab a little onto your cheeks for that added workout glow. There are quite a few of these dual act products on the market so we picked a few depending on your budget. The highest end of the budget is Lip2Cheek by RMS Beauty (£££) or the multi-stick for Ilia (££), mid range we have Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks from Bobbi Brown (££) and at the other end we have Baby Lips Balm & Blush by Maybelline (£).

Get Your Brows on Fleek

make upHaving well shaped and defined brows can literally make the world of difference to your face but you want to make sure that they don’t disappear when you sweat.

Elaine recommended getting your eyebrows threaded for a well defined shape that could be enhanced and filled in with pencil where you need to. She also recommended avoiding using power product on your eyebrows as they tend not to stay in place as long.
