Cosplaying at MCM Comic Con

MCM Comic Con is an event that takes place in London and Manchester twice a year; there are also Comic Con events that take place all over the globe, with the biggest event taking place at San Diego in California.

Although Comic Con is the word – it’s also very much a place for Japanese anime fans too. You’ll find droves of people dressed as Naruto and Sasuke; not just Deadpool and Solid Snake.

One can’t talk about Comic Con without first talking about cosplaying. So what is cosplaying?

Well, it’s the act of dressing up as one’s favourite character from a video game, comic, movie, TV show, anime and pop-culture icons. As you wander around the space of Comic Con, you’ll notice yourself staring at people dressed as big machines which creak and whir as their limbs move, then suddenly find your gaze shooting to the likes of pikachu bumbling around.

You’ll find the vague and unsightly, the niches and unknown – all manner of costumes where those inside act and react like the characters they dress as. That means quite a few overconfident Deadpools striking David Brent level poses when a camera is in sight.

At any Comic Con expo there are always a tonne of little things taking place.

From gaming competitions to talks from game developers and artists, as well as opportunities to meet actors and voice actors.

Alongside this, video games which are yet to be released are shown in playable states – and this is a big draw for many.

Photos are something that are actively encouraged, and walking around taking snapshots of those who look cool is a fine way to spend your time at the expo.

The collection at these stalls is unparalleled anywhere in England – featuring the likes of character-based pillowcases, masks, necklaces, keychains – you name it. It can be a costly endeavour but true fans are undeterred by the price tags.

MCM Comic Con can seem like a psychedelic experience – a place full of literally colourful characters – but it’s an enclave for the likeminded to meet and have fun. It can be a great experience for kids and adults too. So, if you’re ever in the mood to dress up, Comic Con is the place to do it!
