London fashion, like any capital, has its own unique style. From the humble thrift shop dwellers to the art students who wear tacky like it’s great – to the fashionistas and fashionistos – we have style. We’re not New York, we’re not Paris or Milan, we’re London with a uniquely creative British sensibility. Flaunt our style? London fashion week, of course.
This year’s SS17 Collection played it anything but safe. Up and coming designers were all the rage and their collections on show enthralled and bewildered in equal parts. Business as usual, presented with high-fashion glam, with heels at the ready – stilettos once again making an appearance. The rooms were filled with light, the clothes felt familiar, but different enough to be original. The models exuded the requisite attitude as they blinked and came to life with the glamour and allure that draws us all into the fairy tale that is London Fashion week.
The clothes they wore had mishmash textured patterns that covered the shirts and skirts which were unconventional at best – so too were the hoodies (YEEZUS?). A lot can be said about the stylistic choices made by the trend-setters at LFW. In the post show departures, in the autumn heat, the paps found themselves drenched as they persued their model prey.
It was the Holborn Church show that defined SS 2017. The clothes were sparkly and lacy with a vintage vibe of the old, historic church, while still retaining a very modern feel. The catwalk itself functioned like a dance, those exiting the stage and entering, crossing one another like militaristic clockwork. Peacock dresses that were walked in grey and yellow variations. Definitely out there.
So, for those wanting to leap ahead of the curve and start wearing the next big thing before it’s even been found – look to the fashion students and graduates of Central Saint Martin and London College of Fashion – who have proliferated in the London world of fashion. UAL Grad Shows are a great way to see potential new trends and clothes of potentially soon-to-be famous designers. Get in ahead and pick up from the collections of one of the soon to be London fashion greats.
